so i tried to do the golden compass me-me but i can't seem to embed the code properly.
i started with a tiger.
there's a URL: http://www.goldencompassmovie.com/?50943
but it's not so shiny as making it show up on my friend's pages.
in other news: i tried on a dress i bought last summer and hardly wore. it fits better than it did when i bought it! hurrah losing over a stone! (16 lbs to be exact). i am well pleased, and over halfway to my target weight.

The following is the list of the top 100 most frequently challenged books (1990-2000; most recent list I could find) from the American Library Association.

We all have things about our friends that make us slightly envious.
Not in a bad way, but in a 'Wow! I wish I had that person's hair/eyes/money/relationship/toenails/whatever.'
So tell me what about me makes you envy me. . . then post this in your LJ and see what makes me envious of you.

dressing gown + gas stove = badness
Feb. 11th, 2007 07:08 amso i set my dressing gown on fire this morning. i was innocently trying to boil some water and the sleeve of my robe caught on the flames from the stove. which jumped to the side of the robe before i beat it out, leaving a surprisingly undamaged dressing gown. except for a small slightly browned patch and the smell of singed fabric.
this experience was rather alarming.
i have concluded that i shouldn't cook in clothes with big baggy sleeves anymore.

Nov. 18th, 2006 12:48 ami'm still definitely on UK time. so sleepy. but must stay up to get small sister from airport.
day of doing little. spent most of it on the internet. and it involved quite a lot of catching up with friends. i want on AIM, which i hardly do in the UK as my british friends generally don't have it and my american friends are never on when i am. middle of the day UK time=early morning US time. so i went on and talked to a bunch of people i haven't heard from in months, or, in one case, years.
i discovered that i really should be a better correspondent. because
1) one of my friends just got married in scotland. had a party in kent, which he would've invited me to if i weren't a terrible correspondent. he didn't know i was in the UK. i haven't seen him in years, literally, and it would've been nice to catch up, and to meet his wife. but he did show me pictures, which were neat.
2) a good friend from university is in new york. right now. but by the time this was discovered, plans could not be made before he goes away again.
but it was shiny to talk to both of them, and to others. i must e-mail people more often. i probably won't though. because i never do.

Apr. 21st, 2006 01:20 pmi feel as though i ought to do a proper update...
mostly i've just been busying myself with researching, writing and revising essays. another week and a half and they'll be done. then i get to start on my dissertation...
started training to be able to work part-time, waiting on them to get some paperwork back, after which i should finally get to start working.
not much progress on the job (and work permit) for next autumn front, but i've mostly put that on hold as most stuff available ATM wants a too-early start date.
otherwise its mostly just gaming, hanging around HoP, etc.
and in other news...considering i was just guessing, i scored much higher then expected on

there's this big literary festival thing going on at the moment, culminating in this:
'St George's Day Celebration of Food, Fun and Freedom
'Sunday 23 April, 1300-1700, Runnymede Pleasure Ground
'Local writers and poets perform their work and their favourite poems.
'Announcement of Surret Herald R:Fest My Runnymede Creative Writing Competition prize winners. Local food, storytelling, folk dance, bands and entertainers. Come dressed as knights and damsels--£25 prize for best entry.'
not that i know where this place is, but i'm sure somebody does.
perhaps we should gather somewhere a bit before heading off?
anyone else interested?

my computer, which was so very ill, seems to be working again, despite my being told it sounded permanently dead. i don't know if this return to life is the result of a nice long rest (as i rarely turn it off, but it has been off for the last week or so) or my shutting the curtains for the last week (thus keeping the hot sun off it) or what, but i am most pleased.
i only attempted to turn it on in a sort of masochistic despair, wanting to check one more time that it really was dead. but it lives!
naturally, the first thing i did with my revivified machine was back up all the files, as i have no idea if this continued life will last...it may still be sick, i wouldn't know. and i'm going to try to keep it turned off more, as i presume it's good to give it a rest. but who knows if it will stop working again, and permanently...
but at least i've backed up all my important data. and my machine works, for the moment.
