so made it to vienna all in one piece.

yesterday was our last day in budapest. we wandered around muchly, including to the central market. done so much shopping on this trip and i absolutely love it. my bank account doesn't. ah, well. before that was a trip to a fabulous synagogue (the second oldest in the world.) synagogues are great, especially cause they're so different from churches, which we see muchly. don't have human figures, so i can see, just beautiful patterns. eventually, after much losing of ourselves, we found the bus to a place called statue park. which is where they put all the old communist monuments when the cold war ended and the dictatorship fell. i'm convinced the downfall of the soviet empire was caused by bad taste in art. i mean, you oppress people and that'll piss them off, but then you make them live in a city full of really ugly statues--well that's just too much. but really. lots of very blocky statuary, no sense of movement or flow or life. lots of very impersonal 'everyman' type stuff. but rather cool to see, as was wildly different from the usual gorgeousness of budapest.

after this we wandered up to a castle whose name i've forgotten, just to see the outside--very cool and old looking, and wandered through the park to find the fabulous monument to heroes. it's very simple, lots of big columns with just a few awesome statues. then we watched the skaterboys who were using the monument pavilion to practice. there was a guy with a bicylce who did many neat tricks. love to watch people.

that night we got the train to vienna. arrived late but safe, sound, etc.

so we've been to lots of beautiful cities. but vienna has to be the most beautiful one so far. we went into the very tourist district today and just wandered around, going into random churches, marvelling at the stunning architecture, pulling out our cameras every 5-6 seconds. amazing. stopped in a park to lie on the grass in the sun and watch boys play football. lovely and relaxing. went to an amazing coffeeshop and felt terribly indulgent. finally did manage to make it to the museum of fine arts. which has an absolutely stunning building, inside and out, much less the lovely art they have.

and that is all. shall be here till sunday. shall attempt to not go online till then. must stop the addiction.
